Ode to a Spoon

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Deirdre McEachern “Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.” –Rabbi Hyman Judah Schachtel (1907-1990) I have to admit it, I love spoons. I love their round shape. I love their cheerful shine. I love how perfectly they fit into your mouth when you eat something smooth like ice cream or pudding or even when you eat something tummy warming like hot soup. I love spoons because they are functional as well as beautiful. Eating breakfast cereal just wouldn’t be the same experience without them. I enjoy using them very much and always opt for a small, round, silvery spoon anytime it makes sense. One day, my husband came upon me silently admiring a beautiful sugar spoon from our new ‘fancy’ silverware collection. I was thrilled with how the bottom of it was artfully shaped like a sea shell. He thought I was nuts. I realized I feel this way about lots of object in my world. I admire platters, vases, paintings, rugs, blankets, curtains, you name it. Am I materialistic? I suppose on a certain level I am. Here’s my philosophy on stuff: I take great pleasure in appreciating the personal possessions that grace my life. I have profound gratitude for the convenient services my belongings regularly provide me. I even thank them occasionally (when no one is around). I really do appreciate all they do for me and recognize that I could just as easily not have the privilege of their presence in my life. Along those lines, I make efforts to use them. I no longer horde my favorite things in a closet only taking them out once or twice a year, living in fear of their potential demise. These are beautiful objects! Who am I to hide their splendor from view? They deserve every opportunity to be appreciated. Should something meet an untimely end, I am sad. But I also thank them for their loyal service for as long as they existed, and use their passing as an opportunity to bring another beautiful, dutiful item into service. Now, having said this, I do not purchase $1000 spoons or $500 ceramic vases. If one is prepared to replace broken items one must be operating with one’s own financial comfort zone. However, ask yourself: would you rather own an expensive item that you rarely enjoy or own something within your financial means that you enhances your life days on end? I am offering, I suppose, a slightly different view of materialism. It’s a different way of looking at the objects in your world, one where you have a mutually beneficial relationship with them. I know, you’re thinking, “she’s really gone off the deep end this time.” But honestly, this perspective encourages you to notice the beauty surrounding you and the conveniences you enjoy and be grateful for them. This in turn brings positive feelings into your life, what I call Material Contentment. The next time you eat with a nice spoon or sit on a soft sofa, take a moment to realize how lucky you are to be the guardian of such an object. Has it been loyal in service to you? Have you shown it respect and admiration in return? Today is a great day to start talking to inanimate objects. Why not begin by saying “Thanks” to your favorite piece of silverware? Gastric Bypass: The Easy Way Out of Fat Land - Right?

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Kaye Bailey If you listen, even for a moment, to the talk in overweight communities you will almost always hear that gastric bypass weight loss surgery is the easy way out of Fat Land. People with weak spirits and good insurance get a lucky break, have their stomachs whacked and stapled and lose weight the easy way. Weight Loss Surgery: seen by pious public to be surgical baptism for the guilty gluttonous slothful. But those of us who step in the water to be cleansed of our fatty sins know better. Weight loss surgery is NOT the easy way out, a simple dunking of the repentant, the sins atoned, and the price paid, the soul and body healed. We know the atonement is paid every day for the rest of our lives when we set our healthy house in order with gastric bypass. We understand that WLS is not easy. Why, then, does the public think its redemption to weight loss? First: what the public sees is a rapidly diminishing person recently repaired by gastric bypass. The pounds melt away seemingly in a plain sight. What hides behind the curtain are the ugly demons. Dumping? We dont talk about it. Vomiting? We dont tell our regurgitating stories. Head games driving you insane? Who you going to tell? Who is listening? Exercising? Nobody wants to hear about the E word. So what the public sees front and center stage is a person consistently succeeding at massive weight loss; a person glowing in their own rebirth and betraying the fat and hopeless around them. How else can it be explained? WLS must be the magic pill, the easy-way-out of obesity hell. Second: the WLS grass-roots public relations machine tells the public gastric bypass is easy, thus we become our own worst enemy. Tell me if this doesnt sound familiar: I can still eat the same things, just less of them! ha ha ha! or how about, I lost 145 pounds and never had to do a moments exercise WLS is fabulous that way no exercise required. And so the popular belief perpetuates that fat glutton slobs can lose weight just by eating less of the same foods and never exercising. Brilliant! How easy is that? Let me tell you what weight loss surgery is really like for me. I am six years post-op. Two nights ago I vomited my dinner (bacon-seared sea scallops and green beans) because it was just a bit too greasy for my sensitive stomach. A week before that I became deathly ill, its called dumping, from snacking mindlessly on Chinese chow mein noodles. Disorientation, hot sweats and then cold chills dumping a dire consequence of eating the wrong foods with the malabsorptive system. This morning, just like most mornings, I walked two brisk miles on the treadmill to begin my day. This evening I spent 25 minutes strength training to maintain my muscle tone, keep my metabolism running high and making damn sure I dont regain one single pound. And this is how it will be for the rest of my life. I will vomit, dump, exercise and be vigilant day in and day out if I want this easy weight loss surgery to work for me. My body does not take weekends off from weight loss surgery. I dont get chocolate cake just because its my birthday. I do not have a double-cheeseburger with fries and a shake just because Ive had a stressful day and I deserve it. My body is on the gastric-bypass plan 24-7. Do you think thats easy? Weight Loss Surgery post-ops understand what Im talking about. Many of us go through a phase of fighting the gastric bypass and engage in snacking or grazing. We out-eat the stomach pouch and regain weight and we become self-loathing. We vomit and dump and do it all over again thinking we can somehow trick the body. Eventually we learn and we get it: WLS is for life. Weight loss surgery pre-op patients want badly to understand this, but the dieting culture has taught us to be strict for X-number days and then we get a free day. The culture has taught us if we can stick to a plan for X-weeks and lose X-pounds then we can get back to normal. We are all expert dieters by the time we elect to have gastric bypass surgery. There is no back to normal after WLS it is a lifetime lifestyle commitment. Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Kevin McNally Buy Fireworks online, remember safety also…. You need to consider safety when you buy fireworks online. Fireworks can be superb entertainment providing you take the necessary safety measures and ensure that nobody under the age of 18 can buy fireworks online. With the rise of the internet you can now buy fireworks online, but is that a good move ? I am not sure, fireworks can be dangerous in the wrong hands. The history of fireworks dates as far back as 2000 years ago with many claiming that China were the first nation to invent fireworks. If you are planning a celebration such as a birthday, wedding or special day you will often look to buy fireworks online. I remember many years ago being delighted to simply have a sparkler firework in my hand but if you check any of the firework stores now or buy fireworks online you will notice some amazing rockets that light up the sky and can cost almost a weeks pay ! November 5th is a tradition around the world in which you will often be able to visit firework displays, these are usually run by professional organisations and are ideal venues for children to enjoy the show. Please remember if you are about to buy fireworks online you will also need to buy safety equipment such as a fire extinguisher, safety glasses , leather palm gloves and a safety fuse. There are loads of scrapbooking layout ideas for you to try out. Give some thought to how many photos you want on each page. Many scrapbookers like to crop their photographs to highlight the main details and so they can use lots of smaller pictures together. It helps to keep your page layouts simple and consistent. For example, try using just two or three colors of paper and stick to using the same style of frames and borders throughout. Journaling can help add to the story the photos tell, so remember to leave space to insert your notes or any scrapbooking quotes you’d like to use. Using a themed scrapbooking kit can be a convenient and effective way to plan your layouts, as you’ll get a pre-packaged selection of coordinated materials such as cardstock, stencils and frames. This can save you considerable time as it saves you having to purchase all the individual accessories separately. Kits come in a huge variety of themes, making them excellent for creating albums of special events such as wedding scrapbooks. There is also a massive array of scrapbooking embellishments available these days, from sets of stickers to add color and style, to easy to use paper piecing patterns. Are Your Brochures Worth The Paper They’re Printed On?

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Lisa Packer Brochures are one of the oldest marketing weapons in the business arsenal. And for good reason. A well done brochure lends an air of credibility while laying out a persuasive sales message. It conveys a lot of information and moves the customer along in the sales process. When its done right. When done wrong, a brochure is an exercise in futility. It bores the reader and makes a beeline to the round file. Its a waste of time, effort, and landfill space. So how can you make sure yours are done right? First of all, stay out of the we. Believe it or not, telling your prospect what you think is so great about yourself only impresses you. And its not about you. A good brochure, like any other marketing message, is all about what your product or service does for your customer. Every word should be about her, and how what you are offering benefits her. Next, dont let Sgt. Friday write for you. Just the facts doesnt sell things. People make buying decisions on emotion, so you have to connect with their hearts. Find out what feelings will resonate with your prospects and evoke them. Get their juices flowing and stir them to desire what you have to offer. Never waste valuable real estate. The most important panel of your entire brochure is the cover. Its also the most often wasted. The front of your brochure has to interest your prospect enough to get them to open it up and look inside. Putting your company name and a photo of your building there is about like using prime beachfront property for a landfill. Yes, it has to go somewhere. So put it in the back, where people who are looking for it can find it, but leave the spotlight to more glamorous tenants. Start of with an attention-grabbing, benefit laden headline, and a graphic that supports it. Perhaps offer a few bullet points that expand the headline benefit, or introduce a few secondary ones. A line or two of copy at most and youre off to a good start. While you should strive for a conversational tone, make sure there are no spelling or glaring grammatical mistakes. Its a fine line to walk, but you want to sound like youre having a conversation without sounding like you dont know the language. Focus on your customer, connect with her heart, and make the most of your valuable real estate. Then, your brochures will be worth more than the paper theyre printed on. Theyll be worth their weight in gold. Does your marketing forge an emotional connection with your prospects? It can. Lisa Packer, author of “The Power Of Emotion: 6 Triggers That Turn Prospects Into Customers,” specializes in copy that does just that. Postpartum Depression

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By Michael Colucci Postpartum depression is a condition that is primarily seen in women who have just given birth. While it may also be present in men, it is not as extensive. This disorder is considered to be a type of major depression, and there are a number of ways it can be treated. Postpartum depression is experienced by over 70% of women who have recently given birth. The symptoms for this condition may last for hours or days, and patients will be irritable, unable to concentrate, and may also experience a loss of sleep or headaches. The diagnosis for postpartum depression is similar to other forms of major depression. However, the difference between PPD and other forms of depression is that those who are suffering from PPD will typically begin having symptoms a month after they have given birth. In addition to this, the condition may also develop during the pregnancy as well. Many of the causes of PPD are not well understood. However, there are a few factors that are believed to cause the disorder. One cause is the prenatal depression that may be experienced during pregnancy. A woman who has a low self esteem is also at a higher risk for developing PPD. Women who are not receiving social support, or who are in a bad relationship with their spouse will also have higher chances of developing PPD. In addition to this, women who have previously suffered from depression are also likely to develop postpartum depression after they have given birth. Many women who given birth do not have the support of the father, and this person may not be present. In situations like this, the development of PPD is likely. Some studies also indicate that hormone changes in the body of a woman who has just given birth may cause PPD, but there are currently no concrete facts to support this. When a child is born, both parents will be responsible for altering their lifestyle in a way that will benefit the child. In a situation like this, some believe that the radical changes that may need to be made to support the infant may play a role in the development of PPD, but there have been now studies which have found that this theory is accurate. While it is rare, some women can develop extreme forms of PPD, and this can lead to delusions or other severe mental health problems. It should be noted that only about 0.1% of women experience this, and most women only have moderate forms of the disorder. However, a women who has a mental illness before you gives birth is very likely to develop an extreme form of this condition. Studies which have been conducted on animals indicate that a parent will not invest in the well being of their young when costs involved are higher than the benefits. Some animals have even been observed killing or abandoning their offspring. Because human babies require so much care, a mother who is forced to care for the child on her own may not have the necessary tools to care for the child, and may risk harming herself. Many of these women may begin to have negative fews of their children, and may not be responsive to the needs of the child. Finding Bad Credit Loans

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Jeff Lakie Many people within the UK have come to find that they have bad credit and with bad credit come the shocking realization that it is extremely difficult to obtain any type of loan. These same people may feel like they are doomed to a credit less life forever. This could not be further from the truth. There are many ways, any person with bad credit can obtain a loan; you just may not realize which way you should turn. If you have attempted to get a loan through various applications before and have been turned down, you do still have options. These options could be extremely easy if you know just where you should look. Some of the different types of bad credit loans could include, Title Loans, Pawnbrokers, as well as banks and finance companies. Many people do not realize that you may have equity within your vehicle. A very popular type of loan for those with bad credit is a title loan. These particular types of bad credit loans enable you to make use of a vehicle that you possess the title for and turn it into much needed money. No matter what type of vehicle you own, a truck or a car, if you own the vehicle outright and possess the title you will qualify for this type of loan. What happens is this, you take your title in, along with your vehicle, they will ensure everything is in working order and offer you an amount. You can both choose to accept it or deny it, if you accept they will give you a loan, and keep your car title. You will still be able to keep your vehicle though; you will be required to make payments on this loan. If you should fail to make payments, the title loan company has the right to take your vehicle and sell it in any manner possible in order to get their money back. A pawnbroker, is very much similar to a title loan company, they will make a loan to you based on the value of the property you present to them. However, you will not be able to maintain the possession of your property they will keep it. You will have a certain length of time to repay the amount of the loan they have given you. If you fail, and ninety days has passed since the due date, the pawnbroker has the right to make your items available for sale. Those are not your only options, you may also be able to qualify for a bad credit loan with a finance company or a bank. Many of these types of businesses offer loans specific to those with bad credit. There are several ways you can go about this, by using something of value as collateral or obtaining a co-signer. Anyway you go, by obtaining a bad credit loan you could be well on your way to having better credit and a better quality of life as a result.
